Thank you to the alumni and friends who helped unlock Joanne Maguire’s $250,000 endowed scholarship gift for UCLA Engineering students in the Society for Women Engineers. Maguire’s challenge asked that 100 new donors make gifts to the school’s Engineering in Diversity fund. By the end of March, 119 donors participated, raising more than $16,000.
In recognition of National Women’s History Month, UCLA Engineering will highlight our female students and the accomplishments of faculty and alumnae throughout March.
To kick off the month-long celebration, Joanne Maguire MS ’78, the former executive vice president of Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company and the 2017 UCLA Engineering Alumna of the Year, has issued a matching gift challenge grant to our alumni and friends.
If 100 donors make gifts to the school in support of the Diversity in Engineering fund by March 31st, Maguire will fund an endowment of $250,000 to provide scholarships for members of the UCLA Society of Women Engineers. A gift of any size will help unlock this challenge. Each gift stands as a promise that UCLA Engineering will continue to lead the academic world in excellence through diversity, inclusion and equality.
This scholarship challenge is part of the school’s initiative to increase the number of female students from 25% of enrollment to 33% in five to 10 years.
Since UCLA graduated its first female engineer, Barbara Wynn Pritzkat, in 1948, numerous alumnae and faculty have made a profound impact on our school and the world at large. The timeline below highlights a few of these amazing individuals and their 21st Century accomplishments.
