UCLA graduate student Adrian Tang earned first place and $10,000 at the inaugural Broadcom Foundation University Research Competition sponsored by Broadcom Foundation, a non-profit organization funded by Broadcom Corporation. Tang is a Ph.D. student in the Electrical Engineering Department at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. He is studying radars for low-cost, low-power and portable THz imaging systems, which have many new applications in security screening, trace gas detection and biomedical imaging.

Tang was among 12 student finalists from 10 universities competing in a poster session at the opening reception of Broadcom’s annual Technical Conference. Also attending from UCLA was graduate student Amr Abou El Sonoun, who presented his research on multiphase multipath ring oscillators, which can enable next generation integrated circuits for enterprise data centers.

The finalists, who were selected by Broadcom Foundation’s STEM University sub-committee, discussed their projects and how future application of their research would improve lives and contribute to society at large. More than 400 distinguished Broadcom engineers judged the entries on technology, content and presentation with the top three winners being awarded an unrestricted cash prize of $10,000, $5,000 and $2,500 respectively.

Broadcom Foundation’s mission is to advance education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by funding research, recognizing scholarship and increasing opportunity.

Broadcom Foundation’s University Research Competition was held June 6-7 at the Hyatt Regency in Irvine, Calif.
