Day-long Event on May 5 Focuses on the Convergence of Bio-Nano-Info Technologies

Marking another milestone year of growth, the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science will hold its 2006 Research Review on Friday, May 5. Focusing on “Multidisciplinary Engineering for the 21st Century: Convergence of Bio-Nano-Info Technologies,” the review will present research news from faculty across the school’s seven departments, and also will include key speakers from industry and government.

“Our annual review is an opportunity for us to showcase the School’s research accomplishments. It is this research, done by our exceptionally talented faculty and students, along with collaborations with other top institutions, industry, and government that make us one of the top 10 public engineering schools in the country. We are exceedingly proud of all we are accomplishing together,” said Dean Vijay K. Dhir. “The review is our chance to share this good work.”

The 2006 research review will focus on a breadth of interdisciplinary bio-nano-info topics, with morning sessions featuring presentations on taking polymers from the lab to the marketplace, biomimetic strategies for tissue engineering, potential benefits of bio-nano-information system technology, architecture and applications of networked sensing systems, and an overview on the challenges of nanoelectronics and nanosystems.

Lunch will include a venture capital panel discussion with David Aslin of 3iVentures, Chad Brownstein of ITU Ventures, and Sam Kingsland of Granite Ventures.

The afternoon will be split into a series of technical breakout sessions from across the School’s seven departments:

Bioengineering
• Synthetic Biology and Regenerative Bioengineering

Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
• Chemical Engineering Approaches and Applications in Nanotechnology
• Synthetic and Systems Biotechnology for Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals, and Energy

Civil and Environmental Engineering
• Improving the Performance and Reliability of Infrastructure
• Advances in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering

Computer Science
• Graphics, Animation, and Computer Vision
• Networking
• CAD and Architecture
