Two postdoctoral scholars at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science were among eight winners of the 2013 Chancellor’s Award for Postdoctoral Research at UCLA. In total 23 post-doctoral scholars from across the entire campus were named finalists for this year’s award, including winners Aram Chung, of bioengineering, and Eric Diebold, of electrical engineering; and finalist Euan McLeod, of electrical engineering.

2013 Chancellor’s Award for Postdoctoral Research winners

Aram Chung, a post-doctoral scholar in bioengineering associate professor Dino Di Carlo’s Microfluidic Biotechnology Laboratory. Chung’s research interests are in small-scale fluid mechanics for biology and optics (www.chungresearch.com). He received his Ph.D. in 2011 from the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University. Recently, he has accepted a position as an assistant professor of  mechanical engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, N.Y.  Chung 2013
Eric Diebold, a post-doctoral scholar in the Photonics Laboratory of Bahram Jalali, professor of electrical engineering and bioengineering, and holder of the Northrop Grumman Endowed Opto-Electronic Chair in Electrical Engineering. Diebold’s research interests are in combining fluorescent imaging with radiofrequency communications technology. This ultra-fast imaging technology has applications in brain mapping and the detection of rogue cells in blood. Diebold received his Ph.D. in applied physics from Harvard University in 2010. He plans to form a start-up company based on the technology, which is called “Fluorescence imaging using Radiofrequency-tagged Emission” or FIRE. Diebold 2013
