2020 UCLA Engineering Awards Dinner The UCLA Samueli School of
Engineering held its annual celebration of excellence by alumni, faculty
and students at its 2020 Awards Dinner.
AI Researcher Named Sloan Research Fellow Prof. Guy Van den
Broeck was one of four UCLA faculty members who received a fellowship
from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. He also recently received the
National Science Foundation’s CAREER Award.
Netravali receive NSF CAREER Award Prof. Ravi Netravali
has received an NSF CAREER award, the agency’s highest honor for early
career researchers, to improve web accessibility.

Bioengineering Ph.D. Student Receives $10K Prize Joseph de Rutte
overcame the odds to win this year’s $10,000 Society for Laboratory
Automation and Screening Innovation Award, becoming only the second
student to ever win the prize in its 16-year history.

Two UCLA Samueli Alumni Elected to NAE UCLA Samueli alumni
Alison K. Brown Ph.D. ’85 and Reza Rofougaran ’86, M.S. ’88, Ph.D. ’88 –
were elected to the National Academy of Engineering earlier this month.
Professor Emeritus John D. Mackenzie John D. Mackenzie, a
professor emeritus of materials science and engineering at the UCLA
Samueli School of Engineering who made pioneering contributions to glass
and ceramics processing, passed away on Feb. 19. He was 94.
