Afanasyev is a member of the UCLA Internet Research Lab headed by his former graduate advisor, Lixia Zhang, UCLA’s Jon Postel Professor of Computer Science. His research interests include network systems and protocols, future Internet architectures, network security, mobile systems, multimedia systems, and peer-to-peer environments.
His current research focus is the Named Data Networking (NDN) project funded by the National Science Foundation. The project aims to shift the Internet’s naming architecture from delivery of opaque information packets to retrieval of named data chunks. This fundamental change aligns the Internet architecture with today’s applications, solving many existing problems, and opens the door for new innovations on the Internet.
Afanasyev was one of six post-doctoral scholars across the university to receive the award this year. The award ceremony was held April 22. The award includes a prize of $5,000.
